People often describe Ottawa as a quiet and understated capital, almost reserved. We were told it wasn’t particularly exciting, that it was calm and serene. But as always, we wanted to form our own opinion. So, one Friday, we hit the road from Montreal, ready to explore the capital of Canada.
Ottawa is a city that unveils itself slowly. It doesn’t seek to impress at first glance, but if you take the time to discover it, you’ll be charmed by its subtle allure. Founded in 1826 under the name Bytown, it grew around the UNESCO World Heritage Site Rideau Canal before becoming the political heart of the country.
Strolling through Ottawa means exploring Parliament Hill, the Rideau Canal and its locks, or savoring the city’s culinary scene. It’s a place where history blends with modernity, where families on bicycles cross paths with diplomats in suits.
In the end, Ottawa won us over with its simplicity and gentleness. A capital city that, in its own unique way, knows how to capture a small piece of your heart.

Our Two-Day Itinerary in Ottawa
CULTURAL AND HISTORICAL DISCOVERIES
The Changing of the Guard
Start your day with the Changing of the Guard, a must-see event that takes place in summer, from late June to late August, every day at 10 a.m. on Parliament Hill. You’ll admire the guards in scarlet uniforms and their imposing bearskin hats during a precisely orchestrated ceremony accompanied by a military band. The ceremony lasts about 45 minutes.
We attended the beginning and the arrival of the guards but didn’t stay until the end, finding the whole event somewhat repetitive, with a series of pieces played by the orchestra. To get the best spots, it’s advised to arrive a bit early. However, even without arriving early, the crowd wasn’t too dense, making the experience pleasant.
Parliament Hill
Parliament Hill is a must-visit during your trip to Ottawa. Although the Centre Block has been closed for renovations since 2019, parliamentary activities continue in temporary buildings.
Guided tours:
- House of Commons: Sessions are now held in the West Block. Free guided tours are available to learn about the role and history of this institution. It is recommended to book your tickets in advance. Book your visit to the House of Commons
- Senate: Sessions take place in the Senate of Canada Building, formerly Ottawa’s train station. Free guided tours are also available. Reservations are recommended. Book your visit to the Senate
Peace Tower
The Peace Tower, an iconic symbol of Canada, is currently closed to the public due to renovations of the Centre Block. These works are expected to last about 10 years, with a potential reopening around 2029.
Explore the ByWard Market
Explore this market where you’ll find plenty of restaurants and shops. There are so many things to see and taste: local product stands, charming small eateries, and cafés that invite you to stop at every corner. We won’t recommend specific restaurants because there are too many, but we enjoyed an ice cream and a crepe there.
Canadian Museum of History
Cross the river to visit this museum in Gatineau. Discover the exhibits on First Nations and admire the impressive Grand Hall with its towering totem poles.
NATURE AND ADVENTURE
- Pink Lake Trail (3 km, easy): A loop around Pink Lake, known for its unique water color
- Champlain Lookout (1.1 km, moderate due to incline): One of the most famous viewpoints in the park
- Wolf Trail (8 km round trip, moderate): Offers stunning views of Gatineau Hills and the Ottawa River Valley
Best Places to Eat in Ottawa
So, the Riviera in Ottawa is the spot if you’re looking for great food in a stunning setting! Located in a former bank building with gorgeous art deco decor, it’s the perfect place for a memorable dinner. The menu features modern Canadian dishes, and while the cocktails look fantastic, we made a choice that didn’t quite hit the mark—but that might just be a matter of personal taste.
It’s definitely on the pricier side, so it’s not an entry-level restaurant, but it’s a beautiful spot for a special night out. We highly recommend booking in advance, as it’s often fully booked.
Play Food & Wine
Conveniently located in the ByWard Market, Play Food & Wine offers a modern tapas concept, perfect for sharing multiple dishes. The menu highlights local and seasonal ingredients, paired with a carefully curated wine list.

Known for its welcoming atmosphere and creative cuisine, Supply and Demand specializes in seafood and freshly made homemade pasta.
North & Navy
For an Italian touch with a Canadian flair, North & Navy offers delicious cuisine in a cozy setting. Their dishes are inspired by Northern Italy but made with local ingredients.
Datsun
For a modern and flavorful Asian experience, head to Datsun. Located on Elgin Street, this restaurant offers fusion cuisine inspired by Thailand, Japan, and Korea.
Where to Stay in Ottawa
The Metcalfe Hotel in Ottawa is a great place to stay if you’re looking for a stylish and well-located accommodation. Just steps from Parliament Hill, we loved the warm atmosphere and the super friendly staff. The rooms are cozy, with hardwood floors and quality bedding, perfect for relaxing after a day exploring the city. If you’re looking for a cool spot for your stay, The Metcalfe is an excellent choice!
Bonus : Nordik Spa nature Chelsea
The Nordik Spa-Nature in Chelsea is an incredible relaxation experience. Nestled in nature right next to Gatineau Park, it’s the largest spa in North America, and it truly lives up to its reputation.
We spent an entire day there and came out completely relaxed. With nine outdoor baths, eight different saunas, and the infinity pool, there’s so much to enjoy! Each sauna has its own vibe, with essential oils and unique lighting, creating a truly sensory experience.
One of the coolest features is the saltwater floating pool. You literally float as if you were in the Dead Sea—it’s incredibly soothing. If you visit, make sure to book your spot for this experience; it’s absolutely worth it.
We also tried the on-site restaurants, and they were fantastic. Whether it’s for a quick snack or a more elaborate meal, there are plenty of delicious options. We loved sipping our mimosas while enjoying the view of the surrounding mountains and forests.
If you need an escape from the everyday and want to recharge, the Nordik Spa-Nature is the perfect place. We recommend going on a weekday to avoid the crowds and fully enjoy the experience. We’ll definitely return as soon as we can!
